Interested in Volunteering in Your Community?

WVFC Fire Truck

Did you know that approximately 788,250 of the nation’s 1,134,400 firefighters are unpaid volunteers?  We meet many residents that are surprised to learn that we are not a paid fire department. Many people may ask why there is such a reliance on volunteers to provide fire protection services in the United States? The answer to this question is complicated, but it lies somewhere between the significant cost savings for communities that could not otherwise support a paid service, and the long history of the volunteer fire service in Pennsylvania that started when Benjamin Franklin established the first volunteer fire company in 1736.  It is the goal of the Wexford Volunteer Fire Company to maintain a volunteer organization for as long into the future as possible, but we need your help.  We are always seeking new members and offer a wide variety of membership options.

Are you interested in serving your community? All we need from you is the time you can spare, and a desire to serve.  All training and equipment are provided at no cost, and we utilize a system that allows members to complete training requirements at a pace that best suits their personal schedule.  We also accept members for non-emergency roles, and with these roles there is even more flexibility in how you can volunteer your time.

As the benefits of membership are numerous, the following is just a partial listing.  Membership will create the opportunity to meet new people, develop strong friendships, and become engaged in the community.   Anyone serving with us will have plenty of opportunities for self-fulfillment as they train, work, and respond to serve the community.  Some of the tangible benefits include; a local earned income tax credit for volunteer members; access to a full scholarship program to the Community College of Allegheny County; a well-equipped fitness room at our station; membership appreciation events and reduced membership costs for the Pine Community Center.

We have membership options for anyone aged 14 and over.  To learn more please visit the recruitment page on our website at You can contact us through the website or our Facebook page @wexfordvfc, or by calling 724-935-1491. A member of our membership committee will contact you to set up a no-obligation meeting to answer any questions you may have and give you a tour.
